Question and Thesis:
How did the Iran Hostage Crisis weaken the American government and society?
The Iran Hostage Crisis ultimately caused a wave of outrage in American society because of the lack of faith in Carter to retrieve the hostages.
- Carter faced high inflation and unemployment rates
- Carter wasn't doing anything for our country
- Shah killed thousands of people (12,000)
_ Diagnosed with cancer(lymphoma) and fled country
- Came to America to be treated
_ Rioters swarmed U.S. embassy in Tehran and took hostage of 66 Americans
- Some were released within the first week
- 52 Americans were kept hostage
- America froze $8 billion of their assets
- Demanded the return of the Shah
- Hostages kept for 444 days before an agreement was made
Iran was very angry at America because they took refuge of a man who had brutally murdered twelve thousand people. They weren't going to give back our people until we gave the Shah back to them. The Shah was very sick and it was clear that he was going to die no matter what, however we kept him in our country until he did, which is the only reason why the hostage crisis came to an end.
